Day 5 and 6: Lake Bohinj and Ljubljana

Day 5: Lake Bohinj and Ljubljana Food Tour

We checked out of our magical tree house and drove to Lake Bleds lesser known sister lake Bohinj. We took the gondola up to Vogel Ski area, which gave beautiful sprawling views of the Julian Alps and Lake Bohinj.

Neither of us had ever been to a ski resort on the off season.

From the Vogel ski area, we could see and hear this waterfall from far away. It was crazy how loud it was from miles and miles away. We figured if we were close enough to hear it, we must see it. It had a staircase, straight up to it. Well worth the burning thighs.

After spending two days in Bled without trying the famous Bled cream cake, before we left the area we were obliged to try this guy. Right after a waterfall hike seemed like as good of a time as any...

Lots of food pictures today. After leaving Bohinj, we drove a little over an hour to Ljubljana. We had about 10 minutes to spare before starting our food tour. It was a combination of a city tour and food/wine tour. A great way to start a visit to a city. Our tour guide just got right to it.. sardined and calamari. Calamari good, sardines... well we both tried them.

Next up, medicine and prosciutto at the famous Grand Hotel.  Yes, I said medicine. Supposedly, this wine is high in iron and anti-oxidants they used to give it to people for all sorts of ailments like anemia. My favorite... women would be given it right after child birth.

When we arrived in Ljubljana, we were so relieved to finally see the sun. Not too far into the tour, these gloomy clouds moved in. Made for a great picture, but later a very wet walk between restaurants.

Just before the storm hit on Butcher bridge.

We escaped into the 3rd restaurant just as it started coming down hard. The wine here was not a rose, but a blend of red and white. It was interesting, but the  kielbasa, mustard and horseradish was delicious.

Our last savory of the night was stuffed dumplings in a mushroom sauce. The favorite of the night for both myself and Kelly.

We finished the night from the Ljubljana Skyscraper with a 360 degree view of the city. The castle looking in the distance.

And a layered dessert of course...

Day 6: Ljubljana Biking, walking, eating, and drinking (lots of -ings)

Finally, we had a full day of sun! We had our same tour guide from the food tour for our bike tour today. She took us all around town along the rivers and through parks. One of the interesting areas called Metelkova reminded us a lot of Christiania in Copenhagen. Graffiti everywhere and a lot of unique art.

There was a lot of random grafitti, but some were interesting and deep. This library had two murals. This one said something along the lines of “what  you keep it in your head, no one can steal.”

And this one is a granny that translates to something like “in everyone’s life, there is a little rain.”

We ended the bike tour with a beer and coffee in Tivoli Park.

Then, we decided we should hike up to the castle. Here is the view from the bottom.

And here is the view from the top. If you look close, you can see the Alps in the distance. Thankful for a clear day.

Finally, we ended the night with some bubbly, goulash and dumplings.

We loved you Slovenia. Next up... Croatia.
